The best hand in this type of game is a five-card flush. Five-card straights are not used as much in this game. However, a pair of aces makes a very strong hand. Most poker variants are played with a standard deck of cards.
In most modern poker games, a forced bet is involved. This is often called the ante and is often used to help raise the pot. Other names for the ante are the blind and the big bet. To be able to use a forced bet, a player must match the previous bet in size.
There are other, more subtle forms of the ante that are used in a variety of other poker games. A few, such as draw and split-pot, require a player to place a small amount of money into the pot before the deal begins. They are not quite as big a deal as the ante, but are a nice way to keep the money rolling.
Poker can be played with any number of players. Typically, the ideal number of players for a game is between six and eight. Some variations, such as stud, are best played with a few more than that. As a general rule, a poker game with a large number of players will have more rounds of betting than a game with a few. Similarly, a game with a small number of players may not have as many rounds of dealing.
In most poker variants, each player has an obligation to bet in the first betting interval. However, this is not always the case. For example, a five-card draw game requires a player to place a small ante into the pot before the draw. Once this has been done, the player can begin to play. During this first betting period, the player is allowed to call, raise, or fold.
